My Favorite Attributes of God

When times are dark, when I feel like I am all alone, or when all hope seems lost, I just try to think about Who my God is. As part of my daily morning devotions, I sometimes consider which of God’s attributes are my favorites.

Typically, the first one that comes to mind is His sovereignty. He is the Supreme Power. He is in total control; and while all control is His, He still chooses to let us make our own decisions. When we do our best to please God by honoring His commands and desires, we are acknowledging His sovereignty and submitting to that authority. He controls the good, and He controls the bad.

In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: (Ephesians 1:11)

Knowing that He is in supreme control, we can trust Him. The One Who created each of us and the entire world has the power to do what He wishes and the will to make it happen. Because of this, we can have faith that the perfect, holy, righteous, and just God Who willingly gave His Son for our sins knows exactly what to do; He is sovereign.

My second favorite attribute is His love. Many songs have been written about the love of God, but none are as beautiful as the sixteenth verse of John chapter three: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Our Father loved us so much that He willingly offered His Son to pay the price for our sins. God gave His perfect and only Son to pay for everything that makes us unworthy of Him.

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13)

Jesus laid down His life, not only for His friends but also for His enemies—those who spat on Him, cursed Him, and killed Him. The only Person Who will ever know all the evil filth that I have done is the only One Who loves me so much that He chooses not to remember my unworthiness.

When recalling these attributes of God, the most important detail I dwell on is that He is not just God—He is my God. My God is sovereign, and He is loving. I belong to Him, and He belongs to me. There is nothing anyone can ever do to change that.

These attributes are not just facts to study; they are realities we can rest in every single day. When life feels overwhelming, we can trust His absolute control. When we feel our own unworthiness, we can lean entirely on His love. We do not need to navigate this dark world on our own. No matter what trials we face today, we can move forward with complete confidence, knowing that the sovereign, loving Creator of the universe is our God.
