Happy Monday. For who hath despised the day of small things?… – Zechariah 4:10
At times, we all feel little and think our lives are insignificant. As aging creeps up on me, I feel I cannot make a difference as I once could.
My daughter Becky sent me the following story, and it encouraged me.
Naval Admiral William McRaven, commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command, gave the commencement address at the University of Texas in Austin. He specifically told the graduates to make their beds.
Continuing, he explained that the instructors who teach Navy Seals also inspect the Seals’ beds each morning to see if they are made tightly and correctly. Making a bed may seem to be a mundane task. Mundane it is, but there is wisdom in that routine.
He said, “If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another; and by the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed.”
He explained that if by chance we have had a miserable day, we will return to a bed that we made well, and that well-done task will encourage us that tomorrow will be better. He made a great point: little things do matter!
He said, “If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.”
Another wise man said this, “A person who will not take care of the little things will not take care of big things, for big things are but an accumulation of little things.” His name was Dr. Jack Hyles.
Does your life, your task, or your worth seem small today? Do not be afraid to give it to God and others because it is greater than you realize!
