One morning, I was reading Psalms, as is my custom, when I came to a very familiar verse. Psalm 121:1-2 says, I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. I thought of the many times throughout my life when I went to God for help in an area that only He could remedy.
Psalm 121 is a series of promises for which we can be thankful. It goes on to say, The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade…The Lord shall preserve thee…The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in…. This chapter is filled with so many great truths that we can claim when we look to the Lord for our help.
A few days later, I was reading Psalm 123, which has similar wording but with a totally different connotation. Psalm 123:1-2 says, Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens. Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as they eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us. While we should be looking to the Lord for His help, we also should be looking to the Lord for His next command. Just as the servant looks to his master to see what he wants from him, we should be looking to God for what our next step in life is.
In every situation, there is a reason to look to the Lord. We can look to Him when we need help, and just as the Bible promises, He comes through for us in every situation in the way that He deems best. Just as important, we also must seek Him to know what He wants from us next. Let us lift up our eyes to the Lord always because He has promised to deliver us and guide us, as long as our eyes stay on Him.
