When you were younger, did you have a favorite toy, blanket, or a stuffed animal? Did that item go everywhere with you? Did you sleep with it every night? Do you know a child (maybe your own) that just cannot leave the house or go to sleep without his favorite blanket or stuffed animal?
One of my boys had a favorite stuffed monkey when he was younger. My son loved that monkey and could not sleep without it. Once, after visiting a friend, we were 45 minutes into our drive home when we realized we left it. My husband actually drove all the way back to get that monkey.
Joshua 23:8 says, But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day. The word cleave stands out to me in this verse. Cleave means “to cling, to adhere, to abide fast together, to follow.” Like a child that cleaves to his blanket or stuffed toy for comfort, we should cleave to the Lord and to His Word. Hebrews 13:5 says, …I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. As Christians, we have this perfect promise. He gives us the comfort and peace we need, as long as we will cleave to Him. No matter what happens in life, good or bad, He is with us. Just like the child who cleaves to his stuffed animal or blanket for comfort, how much more comfort we will get from cleaving to our Heavenly Father!
