Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; – Philippians 1:27
The word “becometh” or “becoming” is rarely used in our modern day. In the past, people would have said, “That dress is very becoming on her,” or “That is a becoming hairstyle for you.” Becoming is highly interesting word. According to Webster’s 1828 Dictionary, the word “becoming” means “fit; suitable; congruous (consistent); proper; graceful; belonging to the character, or adapted to circumstances.” Furthermore, the word conversation in this verse refers to our way of life or manner of living, in other words our behavior.
Therefore, our way of life should be that which “fits” the gospel of Christ or is suitable to the gospel. When others see us living our day-to-day lives, does it fit the gospel of Christ? I am in no way promoting the idea of “lifestyle evangelism,” for it is every Christian’s responsibility to share the gospel with others. However, when others see us, will they think, “That person looks like a Christian. There is just something different about her.”? Are we living in such a way that someone else would want to know more about Christ after crossing our paths?
Many “behaviors” we try to instill into our children at an early age are also those that we should be implementing into our daily lives. Such traits as humility, holiness, hard-working, and helpfulness are all qualities that would be considered behaviors that …becometh the gospel… All of these, among many others, are suitable, proper, and fit the gospel.
The Apostle Paul was encouraging the church at Philippi to live in such a way that would promote the gospel. I pray that my behavior …becometh the gospel of Christ… rather than bringing shame and reproach to His name. Let us all determine to be “becoming” of the Lord Jesus Christ.
